As stated in our objectives, NMM seeks to promote and facilitate research and scholarship based on manuscripts and the wealth of knowledge that lies therein. NMM recognizes that traditionally research initiatives in this area suffer either due to inadequate resources / avenues / information. Scholarship based on the knowledge that is the precinct of old manuscripts also suffers due to inaccessibility of material or due to limited availability of resources.

As a direct consequence of this limited accessibility of manuscripts, popular culture tends to ignore the value (whether educational, aesthetic, or informational) of manuscripts and therefore undermines the significance of their upkeep and care.

The Mission has already initiated a programme of publication of papers and documents relating to manuscripts in the year 2004-05

  • The 2 working papers outlining Standards of Digitization and Standard of conservation were brought out last year.
  • The revival of the project of the New Catalogus Catalogorum in the Madras University with the completion of the remaining volumes of the New Catalogus Catalogorum was initiated by the Mission . Under the project, the existing volumes of the NCC are being revised. The proposed ten volumes to cover the rest of the alphabets would be completed by the Department of Sanskrit, Madras University . The fifteenth and sixteenth volumes from "Brahmasutra" to "Bhagavata" are now complete and the seventeenth volume is nearing completion. The NCC Project would be made available in print format as well as electronic CD-ROM format from fifteenth volume onwards during the Tenth Plan.

However, in an effort to further rectify this situation, NMM seeks, in the future, to support such publication initiatives as catalogues (of Indian manuscripts), critical editions of important manuscripts and original works (on different aspects of manuscripts).

The details of the texts currently under consideration for publication are as follows:

Name of text Name of Author Name of publisher Type of text Available at
Vadhula grhyagamavrttirahasasya

Along with the above scholarly efforts backed by years of research, NMM also plans to publish the various papers and lectures delivered at its various forums. At present, the Mission is getting the following volumes ready:

Tattvabodha Series of Five Lectures Delivered during Kriti Rakshana, NMM's second anniversary celebrations, in Feb. 2005

NMM is also planning to publish a bi-monthly newsletter - Kriti Rakshana, of which we hope to have the first edition out in July 2005. This step is being taken with a two-fold purpose:

  • To provide regular updates on the Indian scenario with reference to manuscripts to people already working in this area or who are otherwise interested
  • To generate wider interest in, and appreciation of, manuscripts amongst the Indian populace at large, so that a more considered future is assured for mss.

This newsletter will be distributed freely to our partner institutions and to universities / college libraries. An electronic version of the same is also available for downloading.
